Health-related Life Experience of International Students:Koreans Residing in the United States Focused on College Students

Abstract

|
Purpose:The purpose of this study was to explore health-related life experiences of Korean international students residing in the United States.
Methods:The participants of this study were eight Korean international students, grades ranging from sophomore to senior classes. Data was collected through in-depth interviews of participants. Data were analyzed using the phenomenological methodology by Colaizzi.
Results:From significant statements, six theme clusters were identified as follows: Desolation coming from a changed relationship; Worsening condition of health ; Being physically and psychologically worn out due to the pressure from living independently; A feeling of confusion derived from Psychological dichotomy between inferiority and superiority; difficulty of receiving medical service; acknowledgement of the social and cultural glass ceiling.
Conclusion:The results of this study may become a foundation of development for the health care program that can elevate the interest level of international students regarding their health and responsibilities to take care of their health.
